Key Ingredients and Their Benefits:
Calendula: In holistic traditions, calendula is renowned as a vulnerary herb that accelerates the healing of internal wounds, making it highly effective for peptic ulcers, gastritis, and duodenal ulcers. Studies indicate it reduces gastric acid secretion and protects the stomach lining from erosion caused by stress or medications like aspirin, while its anti-inflammatory properties reduce swelling in the stomach wall. The herb’s demulcent (mucilage-rich) nature coats and soothes irritated tissues throughout the digestive tract, providing relief from acid reflux (GERD), colitis, Irritable Bowl Syndrome (IBS), and Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).
Cinnamon: Several evidence-based benefits for digestive health include triggering the secretion of digestive juices and enzymes such as amylase, lipase, and protease, which are essential for breaking down carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. Research indicates that cinnamon can modulate the secretion of stomach acid and pepsin, helping to neutralize excess acidity and maintain a balanced stomach pH. This action reduces the risk of acid reflux, heartburn, and the production of carbon dioxide gas that causes bloating after meals.
Fennel Seed: In holistic traditions, the volatile oils in fennel are believed to trigger the secretion of digestive juices and enzymes such as amylase, lipase, and protease. This enhancement improves the breakdown of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates, preventing food from stagnating and fermenting in the gut, which is a common cause of gas and indigestion.
Thyme: Research indicates that Thyme aids digestion primarily by relaxing gastrointestinal muscles, stimulating enzyme production, and balancing gut bacteria. Its volatile oils, particularly thymol and carvacrol, act as powerful carminatives to prevent gas formation and relieve bloating.
How to Brew:
This Summer blend is crafter to be enjoyed either hot or cold. It is recommended that you follow these instructions to brew it, first, hot and then add ice or chill. By first brewing it hot, you are extracting as many of the essential oils, nutrients, and flavors as possible from the botanicals. If you brew it cold (i.e. as "Sun Tea") then you will not extract the full potency of the blend.
Measurement: 1 tbs of loose leaf tea per 8 oz. of boiling water (160 degrees F. recommended for best results)
Steep Time: 12 to 15 minutes with the top of the cup/tea pot covered to retain essential oils OR use a French Press for tea/coffee. If steeping in a cup or tea pot, use an infuser for best results.
Sweetener: Sweeten to preference while warm so that the sweetener dissolves completely. It is recommended that if you are sweetening with honey, do so when the tea has cooled to 100 degrees F. or cooler to retain the natural nutritional benefits of the honey.
